You may have heard some things about self-care but didn’t understand what it entails. That, or you have a preconceived notion that it involves massages, manicures, and pedicures. If you haven’t gotten into the habit of taking good care of yourself, now is the time to make it a real possibility. You can easily incorporate self-care rituals into your daily routine.
Here are some ways that you can take charge of your physical, mental, and spiritual health on your own:
- Make sure you get a good amount of exercise each day. You don’t have to run a marathon to benefit from physical activity. You can take a short walk to clear your mind after a long day. You can do some gentle yoga stretches in the morning. You can play a game of basketball with your kids. The point is to keep your body moving and your brain producing endorphins which are the “feel good” chemicals.
- Give yourself an outlet for expression. Stress is called the “silent killer” for a reason. It sneaks up on a person and causes a myriad of diseases. Find something that speaks to you on a deeply personal level and makes sure that you give yourself time for self-expression daily. You can paint, play music, write songs, read poetry, keep a journal, create sculptures, etc. Your options are only limited by your imagination.
- Take time to relax each week. It’s all too easy to get caught up in the thought that to be valuable, you must be productive. Make sure that you give yourself some downtime in the week. Use it to take a nap, a long soak in the tub or on the couch watching one of your favorite shows. Do something that makes you feel good but doesn’t give you one ounce of pressure. You’ll feel marvelous having time just for you.
- Make sure to incorporate self-care practices into your daily routine. Your physical, mental, and spiritual health depends on it. If you need suggestions of things to do on a day-to-day basis, refer to the list above.
